In 1888 the post office in the Celia township was moved to land donated by local farmer Rice McDonald, and the town was renamed in his honor. With a population of just over 100 people in about 75 households living in the city, McDonald is quintessentially 'small town America', though much of the population in the zip code are farm families residing outside the city.
